8.11.2010 - The CDC has issued a Health Advisory regarding the recent detection of Influenza A H3N2 virus infections in people in a number of states across the U.S., including two localized outbreaks. Clinicians are reminded to consider influenza as a possible diagnosis when evaluating patients with acute respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia, even during the summer months. The CDC recommends utilizing RT-PCR assays for laboratory confirmation and advises that treatment decisions should not be made based on results of rapid influenza diagnostic tests due to suboptimal sensitivity. Differentiation of Influenza A subtype H3 will help guide treatment decisions due to high levels of resistance to adamantane antiviral drugs among recently circulating H3 viruses.
